Clean Truck Check (CARB): Ensuring Cleaner Air for California

The Clean Truck Check (CARB) program, established by the California Air Resources Board, is a vital initiative aimed at significantly reducing harmful emissions from heavy-duty diesel trucks and buses. By requiring regular inspections and maintenance, this program ensures that vehicles meet stringent emissions standards, promoting public health and environmental sustainability.

Key Program Requirements

  1. Emissions Compliance Testing
  • Effective Date: October 1, 2024
  • Vehicles must undergo emissions compliance testing by a CARB-credentialed tester.
  • Passing tests can be submitted up to 90 days before the compliance deadline to allow time for any necessary repairs.

Example: For a compliance deadline of February 1, 2025, a passing emissions test can be submitted as early as November 3, 2024.

  1. DMV Registration Notices for Non-Compliant Vehicles
If your vehicle model year is 2010 or older, it may not comply with the Truck and Bus regulation. This could result in a registration hold.

What to Do:

  • Check your compliance status.
  • Address any non-compliance issues immediately to avoid a DMV registration block or enforcement actions.
  1. Annual Compliance Fee
  • The deadline to pay the 2023 annual compliance fee was January 31, 2024.
  • For 2024, the fee deadline aligns with your vehicle's compliance deadline (July 1 – December 31, 2024).

Accepted Payment Methods:

  • Credit/Debit Cards: Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover
  • TeleCheck (eCheck): Requires your bank routing and account numbers (processing takes 5-7 business days).
  • Important: Payments made outside the Clean Truck Check portal are not accepted.
